Well it wasn't Hawaii, but we had a fun, short spring break trip. Like our Kauai vacation, my mom came along which makes life feel impossibly easy (at least for me). We stayed at my grandma's house in Vancouver and so that was a lot of fun. The boys spent most of their time scootering around her neighborhood, because these poor farm boys never have had the opportunity to ride anything on pavement at their home (we love the dust and gravel!), much less on miles and miles of sidewalk. My grandma also has wetlands just beyond her backyard, making for a great place to push around dump trucks and get completely muddy.
Along with getting the chance to catch up with family, we made a trip to the Oregon zoo. It was HOT and there were a lot of people, but like I said, my mom came along so that made it really fun. This wasn't her first rodeo, so she saddled me up with this sage advice: "See all the animals you know they want to see first, because then if the day falls apart at least they'll have seen the most important ones." She's so smart. Because of this, we were in and out in 3 1/2 hours, having seen all the highlights, and really most of what the zoo had to offer.
Leah learned how to scream on this trip, and thankfully she didn't practice that during the 5 hour drive back home.
Nick could probably ride a scooter for 6 hours straight without stopping. I'm not kidding. Have you met him? LIMITLESS energy. As he was buzzing by the house, several times I heard him singing Live on Forever, by the Afters which was so precious to me. He always talks about heaven, and how cool it's going to be and how he wants to fly and ride a lion. As he zipped around that neighborhood as fast as he could, belting the lyrics to that song on an 80 degree day, I could feel his little heartbeat for heaven and the joy he was experiencing catching the breeze on that scooter.
Milo comes alive with the natural world, so I knew the zoo would be an awesome day for him. He wanted to stay and observe at each exhibit, far beyond what his little brother had patience for. Nick was darting around, weaving through people, racing to the next spot and Milo was saying "Nick, stop!" and whispering under his breath to me "Oh my gosh, he's stressing me out" (I wonder where he's heard that before?). Again, Grandma Heidi to the rescue. We were able to split the boys and each go with their individual paces. Milo was most excited about the hippos, the lions, and the bald eagles. Here he is, super pumped that the hippos emerged from the water so we could see them!
